Konstantin Petrovich STUDENTSOV [September 10 (23), 1906 – March 24, 1978] was a prominent veterinary scientist, microbiologist, immunologist and epizootologist, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences (1947), senior researcher (1949), Honored Scientist of the Kazakh SSR (1961), Doctor of Veterinary Sciences (1962), Professor (1964), head of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis (1943-1946), Deputy director of KazNIVI for the scientific part (1946-1948), head of the therapeutic and preventive laboratory (1948-1953), head of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis (1953-1975).

K.P. Studentsov was born in the village of Kokryat, Spassky district, Kazan province, in the family of a psalmist. After the October revolution in Russia, his family was subjected to repression by the Bolshevik authorities.

In 1926, K.P. Studentsov graduated from the school of the II stage in Tetyushi, Tatar ASSR and received a general education. In the same year, he was seconded by the Kazan Section of Scientists to enter the Kazan State Veterinary Institute. After graduating from the named institute, September 27, 1930 He was awarded the title of a veterinarian and was initially sent to work as an epizootic veterinarian of the epizootic detachments of the Veterinary and Epizootic Trust of the People’s Commissariat of the USSR in the Petropavlovsk and Pavlodar districts of KASSR, then appointed head of these epizootic detachments.

At the beginning of 1931, for his success in his work, K.P. Studentsov was sent to Petropavlovsk to take courses of veterinary serologists. Upon completion of the courses, he was appointed head of the serological laboratory of the Kokpektinsky state farm No. 86 of the Semipalatinsk district, where he was simultaneously assigned the duties of deputy director of the state farm for the veterinary part and instructor of epizootic detachments.

At the end of December 1932, K.P. Studentsov retired from production and joined KazNIVI as a researcher at the epizootological department. On March 10, 1936, the Veterinary Department of Kaznarkomzem assigned him to concurrently head the Ascoli laboratory and the department for the production of trypanosomous antigen.

After the formation of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis in early 1938, K.P. Studentsov was transferred to the specified laboratory as a researcher, and since 1939 he was appointed acting senior researcher and deputy head of the said laboratory.

On January 15, 1943, K.P. Studentsov was appointed head of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis.

From September 1944 to September 15, 1946, he worked part-time as the head of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Prevention of the Institute of Regional Pathology / in the Brucellosis sector / of the Kazakh branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (from June 1, 1946 of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR), and then continued his part-time work as a senior researcher at the named institute until 1947 inclusive.

On May 7, 1946, at a meeting of the Scientific Council of the Alma-Ata Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute (Protocol No. 11), K.P.Studentsov successfully defended his dissertation on the topic “Serological diagnosis of brucellosis” for the degree of Candidate of Veterinary Sciences. On October 25, 1947, he was awarded the degree of Candidate of Veterinary Sciences and was awarded a diploma of the appropriate sample by the Higher Attestation Commission.

In August 1946, K.P. Studentsov was appointed Deputy director of KazNIVI for the scientific part. On September 30, 1948, he was relieved of his post and appointed head of the therapeutic and preventive laboratory.

By the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of December 18, 1948 (Protocol No. 23), K.P. Studentsov was approved in the academic rank of senior researcher in the specialty “epizootology”.

On February 28, 1953, K.P. Studentsov was transferred to the head of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis.

In the second half of 1958, K.P. Studentsov was sent to the People’s Republic of China, where for several months he provided scientific and methodological assistance to researchers of the National Research Institute.

On May 25, 1961, at a meeting of the Council of the Alma-Ata Veterinary Institute, K.P. Studentsov brilliantly defended his dissertation on the topic “Diagnosis, specific prevention of brucellosis and materials for its therapy” for the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Sciences. After defending his dissertation, by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of May 19, 1962 (Protocol No. 16), he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Sciences.

For services to the development of science, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR awarded K.P.Studentsov the honorary title of Honored Scientist of the Kazakh SSR by Decree dated July 15, 1961.

At the end of August 1962, K.P. Studentsov took part in a competition to fill the vacant position of professor of the Department of Microbiology of the AZVI.

On November 5, 1962, by order of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kazakh SSR No. 480-k, K.P.Studentsov was relieved of his post as head of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis KazNIVI and transferred by competition to the position of professor of the Department of Microbiology of the AZVI.

However, a month later, at the urgent request of the KazNIVI leadership, he returned to the institute and was left in his former position as head of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis (Order No. 523-k for the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kazakh SSR dated December 4, 1962).

On May 6, 1964, by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission (Protocol No. 21/p), K.P. Studentsov was confirmed in the academic title of professor in the specialty veterinary microbiology.

After retiring, K.P. Studentsov was appointed senior researcher – consultant of the laboratory for the study of brucellosis KazNIVI on July 1, 1975.

K.P. Studentsov is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, some of them are reflected in textbooks on epizootology and microbiology of Union significance. He is the author of several books on brucellosis, which are in great demand among scientists to date.

The most important scientific contribution of K.P. Studentsov is the work on the sap of horses, peripneumonia of cattle, diagnosis, epizootology, specific prevention and therapy of brucellosis of farm animals.

K.P. Studentsov’s great merit is the creation of the scientific school of bacteriologists, immunologists and epizootologists of KazNIVI for the study of the problems of brucellosis of farm animals, which was formed in the early 60s of the twentieth century.

With the direct participation of K.P. Studentsov, a scheme for growing healthy young animals from cows with brucellosis was developed, fundamental scientific, theoretical and experimental studies on the diagnosis and prevention of brucellosis of farm animals were carried out.

K.P. Studentsov was awarded several medals of the USSR.

Konstantin Petrovich is buried in the Central Cemetery of Alma-Ata.
